Systems Thinking in Libraries
In the professional settings in which we work, and particularly in high-risk environments like health care, nuclear engineering and aviation, it is not enough to address problems on their own or work through them one at a time without an eye toward improvement. Instead, it is necessary to solve difficulties within a larger context, and that’s where systems thinking comes in. Popularized by Peter Senge of MIT, systems thinking is a way to view organizations by taking a broad perspective that intersects structures, patterns, and events.  Information professionals can learn how to avoid unintended consequences and leverage expertise by developing systems thinking capacities. Session participants will apply diagnostic techniques like the 5 Whys and archetype identification as avenues for navigating systemic influences within the librarian’s sphere to ensure effective services.

SPOTLIGHT SESSION: The Digital Preservation Network
Digital technology has enabled an unprecedented growth of knowledge in essentially all areas of scholarly activity. This knowledge, however, is inherently vulnerable, as digital collections typically are not durable and remain susceptible to multiple points of failure. Absent focused and coordinated effort, much of today’s scholarship will be lost to future generations. The Digital Preservation Network (DPN) seeks to rectify this situation by creating a federated preservation network, owned by and for the academy, that will provide secure digital preservation of the scholarly and cultural record.

Public Access to DoD Funded Research
Access to federally funded research and research data is a topic of strong interest.  The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has directed the principal research funding agencies to develop public access policies to both peer reviewed journal articles arising from federal funds and to the research data that underlies these articles. This talk will put this current directive in the broader context of the open access evolution and in the growing interest in open data. In particular, the talk will focus on the copyright issues that have to be addressed and managed in the context of providing public access to federally funded research and potential with respect to data access as well. The possibilities of text mining and data mining are driving this conversation, and the talk will conclude with thoughts about the future of this terms of use discussion.
