The Road to Successful CI: From Novice to Expert
This course will present a roadmap for starting and managing a competitive intelligence (CI) capability. The course will be taught in a workshop format, with group exercises and open discussions. Geared to the novice as well as the advanced practitioner, the Road to Successful CI will look first at what the discipline is and is not,  then at how librarians/info pros can transition into doing CI. Topics will include sourcing and supporting primary and secondary search, analytical tools and fitness, and reporting methods and templates. Attendees will get real examples from the presenter about how to establish, manage and grow an intelligence function.

Go Beyond Google: Gathering Competitive Intelligence
Organizations today leave a “digital exhaust” that can be seen across the Internet.  While large publicly traded organizations leave a prominent exhaust pattern, small and medium-sized businesses also leave a large smoke trail that can be followed to its source. You can leverage this intelligence to improve account profiling, track the movements of competitors across an industry and across accounts, and  get an overall view of the competitive landscape.  The speaker will illustrate a variety of methods you can use to better collect and analyze open source intelligence from the Web.

Librarians as Intelligence Analysts
This interactive session will identify emerging roles for librarians/information professionals as intelligence analysts , open source specialists, and cyber intelligence analysts. The workshop will dissect job descriptions for IAs, compare the competencies of librarians and IAs, and explore training opportunities such as the open source specialist certificate. Reforms in the intelligence community and enhanced recognition of the value of open source/unclassified information (OSINT) can provide new opportunities for you.  Session objectives include: Sharing information about how librarians can make the transition to IAs in the intelligence community; analyzing IA job announcements, outlining differences between LIS and IA résumés, discussing analytical tradecraft associated with IAs; and highlighting opportunities for librarians/information professionals and SLA.

Global Economic Outlook
The global economy: healing or still hurting?  More than four years after the global recession started, economies are starting to heal, especially in the U.S. But we have been here before: past recoveries have fizzled and left workers and companies still struggling. Will the recovery be more durable this time? Will jobs growth last? How well is the European Union addressing its debt issues? Is there still a chance of a catastrophic collapse of the euro zone. Can China remain the engine of global growth as it enters a new era?

Optimizing Your CI Collection: Where PubINT Meets HumINT
The most successful competitive intelligence process draws on both secondary (published intelligence or pubINT) and primary (human intelligence or humINT) research efforts. Historically, each type of research has been thought of as a separate activity, with development of skills and expertise focused on one or the other. This session will discuss how CI researchers can increase and enhance the value of their efforts by integrating both activities. It will also describe how the use of social media – which is essentially a hybrid of pubINT and humINT – helps provide for an efficient and productive collection process and delivery of complete and comprehensive intelligence findings. Attendees will leave the session with actionable insights they can apply directly and immediately to their CI collection efforts.
