Patents mean big business! In fact, Google bought Motorola just to acquire its patents. But how many of us know what a patent is or what makes something patentable? How do we know if our organization is unintentionally infringing on another organization's patents? What can we do to improve our organization's defensive portfolio? In this expanded version of the popular Patent Research 101 presentation, students will be able to define a patent, explain the opportunities for librarians in patent research, and label the different parts of a patent. After the basics, we'll move to the next level and expose students to free and commercial resources to use in patent research, explain different patent classification systems and highlight their strengths and weaknesses, demonstrate advanced research techniques for prior art research, and explain how to determine if a patent is enforceable. NOTE: Bring your laptop for the hands-on portion of the class. Dedicated Internet access will be provided for this session.
Lightning talks from database producers and suppliers will update you on the the newest features and content sources. Take notes and then follow up for more details in the INFO-EXPO.
