Join us for a walking tour of one of San Diego’s most famous -- and infamous -- areas, The Gaslamp Historic District. Once a center of gambling, prostitution and drug dealing, the area was redeveloped in the 1970s into a historic district with renovated Victorian buildings, shops and restaurants. The tour, led by staff from the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation, will focus on the social and cultural history of the area. Meet at The Gaslamp Museum’s William Heath Davis House
While you're in San Diego, why not tour one of it's most interesting and interactive museums? Enjoy a lively and informative talk and tour at the Maritime Museum of San Diego! Participants will explore the build site of the museum's newest exhibit, the San Salvador, followed by an author presentation aboard a historical ship. The San Salvador is the museum's newest planned exhibit and will be a full-sized, fully functional, and historically accurate replica of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s San Salvador flagship of the Spanish expedition which first explored what is now the West Coast of the United States. Following the build site visit, author Bruce Linder will discuss his book "San Salvador – Cabrillo’s Galleon of Discovery" and talk about the history of the San Diego region aboard the historical ship Berkley. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the Maritime Museum's other amazing exhibits following the presentation.
The tour STARTS at San Salvador Village and ENDS at the San Diego Maritime Museum.

Our tour will begin with a brief bus tour of downtown San Diego. Once aboard the USS Midway, the curator will give us a short presentation on the ship’s library. After the presentation we can tour the library, which is not always open. For the remainder of our visit we can enjoy an audio-guided tour. We will have access to over 35 exhibits and displays, the mess deck, berthing spaces, hangar deck, flight deck and island. Story-telling docents, many of whom served on the Midway, will regale us with stories of sacrifice and service to our country. The Midway is located less than half a mile from the Seaport Village shopping area. Seaport Village has over 50 shops and restaurants many of which are unique to San Diego. The bus will leave from the Marriott and from the Midway. Wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for sun, wind, and climbing up and down steep, narrow stairways (ladders, in Navy parlance). The Midway is not ADA compliant, but its exhibits are 60% wheelchair accessible. The library is non-accessible, but the presentation will be.
