SPOTLIGHT SESSION: E-Books and How They Affect Special Libraries
The library world has been talking about e-books and how they might affect libraries for several years. The problem is that this conversation has almost always been skewed toward public library use of e-books. Other types of libraries, particularly special libraries, have generally been left out of the discussion. Unlike in many public libraries, the motivations for developing special library collections include not only access but also preservation and building a complete collection. The current database model of e-book lending and the copyright issues surrounding e-books do not bode well for the special library model. This session will explore these issues with a panel of special librarians and a member of the publishing industry, who will discuss what the needs are and what can be done to address them.

SPOTLIGHT SESSION: The Race to the Patent Office - the Impact of the America Invents Act
The America Invents Act (Patent Reform Act) went into effect on 16 March 2013.  It switched the U.S. patent system from “first to invent” to “first to file" and is the most significant change to the system in nearly 60 years.  The act has wide ramifications concerning the kinds of innovations that are patentable, who owns inventions, who can use inventions, and how patents are challenged and defended.  A panel of speakers will discuss how the act has affected the patent process and the dramatic and unforeseen impacts they have seen since the law went into effect.

SPOTLIGHT SESSION: The Digital Preservation Network
Digital technology has enabled an unprecedented growth of knowledge in essentially all areas of scholarly activity. This knowledge, however, is inherently vulnerable, as digital collections typically are not durable and remain susceptible to multiple points of failure. Absent focused and coordinated effort, much of today’s scholarship will be lost to future generations. The Digital Preservation Network (DPN) seeks to rectify this situation by creating a federated preservation network, owned by and for the academy, that will provide secure digital preservation of the scholarly and cultural record.

SPOTLIGHT SESSION: Researching Emerging Issues: Climate Change through a Kaleidoscope
We will explore researching emerging issues, using climate change as an example. Climatic change affects many professions served by special librarians. It is a relatively new topic, but it already has an extensive and varied resource base. Our speakers will address how they, in their varying fields of research, approach this seemingly common topic in different ways.  Aspects of climate change intersect each speaker’s specialty (e.g., energy, pollution, water and regulations), but some aspects affect only specific fields. We will take examples from each to explore techniques and resources that aid in researching the changing emerging issue of climate change, and draw out common approaches for tackling similarly complex emerging research challenges.

SPOTLIGHT SESSION: Collecting Dangerously: The Hows and Whys of Controversial Collections
In special libraries, we are often charged with the duty to cover subjects from every possible angle, even if they're controversial. Many academic libraries hold the papers of politically divisive figures, and the Baseball Hall of Fame has the collection of hate mail that Jackie Robinson received. Each of these collections is important for research purposes, but the politics behind developing them can get very hairy indeed. How do you display them? Catalog them? How does your average patron view this collection verses a serious researcher? How do you explain this collection to your board members who might not understand why it exists? This will be a lively presentation of different controversial collections and a discussion of how they have been developed and presented to both the public and their organizations.
